Pumpkin’s Boutique is closing

As of August 1, 2011 I will no longer be operating Pumpkin’s Boutique. I’ve had a great time creating clothes and accessories but due to family obligations, it is time to close. Thank you so much for all of your support over the years!

I will be keeping the blog so if you would like to see the crafts and other stuff I’m up to, I’d love for you to subscribe!

I like big books!

I saw this saying on Pinterest the other day and couldn’t resist making Taryn a bag with it embroidered across the front.

I like bog books and I cannot lie

I had actually already bought some canvas and planned to sew a bag for the stack of library books the kids bring home each week. I know, the 90’s called and they want their song back, but its just too funny! Of course, my darling daughters have no idea where the saying comes from, but they like the bag just the same. I lined the pocket on the front. Its the perfect size for them to put their summer reading logs or any other papers inside.

I also put a little pocket on the strap with a Velcro closure to hold the library card. Taryn feels very grown up when she gets to give the librarian the card. Here she is modeling her new book bag as we were leaving to go to the library!

I have had quite a few requests to make and sell more of these bags, so I’ll be offering them for $25. This includes the embroidery on the front (font can be changed), large lined pocket on the front & Velcro library card pocket on the strap. The canvas comes in many colors, the fabric can be just about anything you want. It is meant to go across your front, messenger bag style but it can also be made to just go on your shoulder. The bag measures 13″x 12″x 3″ but I can make it a bit skinnier and/or taller if you want. The strap can be sized to fit toddler through adult. If you want one, email me at jenica {at} pumpkinsboutique {dot} com to talk about the details!

Now if I could just get that song out of my head…..

One is never enough!

I made my first pillow case style dress here just the other day for my oldest, Taryn. It had elastic at the top and tied over the shoulders. I ruined a baby sling I made and had to start over had some fabric left over from a baby sling I made so I decided to make one for Alaina. This time I added a contrasting border and looped the same fabric through the top front and back into a bow over one shoulder. I may, or may not, have used bribery to get her to take these pictures ;)

Fruity fun

Can you believe I’ve never before made a pillowcase style dress? Its often one of the first things a sewer makes, but I had never done one. I had picked up this great fruit printed seersucker fabric a while back at Joann and decided to make Taryn a simple dress. I used bias to trim the arm holes and tie at the top. There is elastic in the front and back. And some rick-rack just for fun!

Happy birthday America

The fourth of July is almost here! BBQ, friends, fireworks and…. oh no, my kids need something to wear!! This was the conversation I had with myself earlier this week. I had bought the fabric a while back but hadn’t done anything with it yet. So, here’s what I came up with:

I realized after I finished that I probably should have used a different embroidery design on all three, but its too late now. I made matching bows and will hopefully get a picture of my patriotic cuties this weekend!

Taryn and I have been learning about what the fourth of July is all about and its been fun talking about the Boston Tea Party & The Star Spangled Banner. She is excited this year for more than just the fireworks!

Tire shirts to nightgowns

We get lots of tee-shirts from my husband’s work and the kids love to wear them to bed. But lately, Alaina has been wanting night gowns, so she’s been wearing Taryn’s to bed. Unfortunately, Taryn has only a few PJ’s and kept running out! I didn’t want to buy Alaina more PJ’s since she actually has a bunch of them, but I also didn’t want to have to do laundry more often so that Taryn had some to wear. What’s a mom to do? Google for nightgown tutorials, of course! I found this super cute blog post on how to make night gowns from adult tee-shirts. Well, I had a bunch of child sized tee-shirts – surely they would work for toddler night gowns! The original shirts were a youth size small and Alaina is a very skinny 2t.

I made one more but my model was quite done and I didn’t get a picture of that one! The first one I did just like the blog tutorial and made smaller sleeves. The second I used the sleeves to make angel wing ruffles and the third (not pictured) I just left sleeveless. Each took no more than 20 minutes to make and Alaina is excited to wear her tire nightgowns now!

Etsy sweetness

I love Etsy! Not only do I get a lot of ideas from just browsing, I also find so many things I want to buy. Two of my recent favorite shops are Little Birdie Baby Shop who has awesome hand dyed onsesies and Raspberry Bowtique who has the cutest wool felt flower accessories. Ellie was the recipient of some cute items from both of these shops!

Spring dress

Taryn loves dresses and wants to wear them every day. Unfortunately most of her dresses either seem to be play quality or fancy – neither of which are right for school. So last week I let her pick out a fabric from my stash and I made her a quick dress. I used a great tutorial from Make it-Love it and it only took me an afternoon! The only ting I changed was that I didn’t do the elastic casing at the waist, I shirred it four times instead. She wore it to school but I forgot to take pictures until after she got home – so please excuse the messy hair.

Itty bitty shoes

I’ve never made shoes before, not even baby shoes. I used a pattern from Homespun Threads called Pleated Ballerina Shoes. I probably should have used an easier pattern for my first time! However, after a few bouts with the seam ripper, I finally finished my first pair. They match the romper I made the other day. I’m undecided on if I like the brown buttons on the side. What are your thoughts? They are easily removable but would be very hard to put back on if I change my mind.
